| Copacobana Beach | The place is famous from the songs, this beach has some of postos (sections), where the lifeguards are positioned. And each section is renowned for a certain type of people gathering there, for instance, artists, gays, young people etc. The most secure area is perhaps opposite the major hotels. Do not miss this notable curved beach. Copacabana is only 4 km long.
Till the end of the XIX century Copacabana was a remote area with sand, dunes and bushes. The area only began to develop with the opening of Tunel Velho, that connected the village with Botafogo and downtown.
Today Copacabana is among some of Rio's most democratic and diverse neighborhoods. Plenty of penthouses and apartments are located here and which are surely worth more than 1 million dollars. But there are as well buildings with 30 small studio apartments on the same floor, and without parking garage.
You may head for Copacabana to enjoy some of the walking tours, as it is mostly flat, and distances are comparatively short. Copacabana offers a little (and sometimes plenty) of everything, and there's fun for everyone.
Just near Forte de Copacabana you may observe the fishermen's corner with a tradition lasting of over 100 years. It is an incredible thing that fishermen in fact live in the center of one of Rio's most urban districts. You may come before the dawn and watch the action. If you have such a wish, you may even help to drag the nets out of the water.
Another attraction is the bustling nightlife here. It boasts some of Rio's most renowned clubs and bars. You'll also try to avoid beggars, thieves, nonstop aggressive street sellers and numerous attractive (drugged) prostitutes. But if you're not willing to see this, you should head for some other calmer beaches.
