| Beaches of El Salvador | Playa El Majahual is active beach filled with Salvadorans searching for business or a good time. The beach boasts of soft, shiny black sand, medium waves and no rocks. The moment you walk in you're crowded by people persuading you to stop at their hotel or rancho. Naturally, the cheap accommodations are seen to go on forever-look around, because some are betters than others. Here on the beach you may try pony rides, enjoy coconuts and drinks sold by locals. The accommodation for a weekend night may cost you from $4.50 to $7.00.
The main beaches are located along the coastal highway, from Kilometers 30 to 53. El Puerto de la Libertad (The Pier) is the entrance to the town of La Libertad, and its original wooden pier was made in the year 1579. The pier itself still serves fishing boats and also holds a market where the tourists can purchase some of the freshest and cheapest seafood items around.
The beach area named El Obispo is located east of the pier and it has ongoing commercial development due to the construction of a modern shopping mall right on the main street. Located to the western side of the Pier, Punta Roca offers some of the best waves for surfing due to the consistency and quality of the waves all year round. The spot is also very popular for the many restaurants in the area and because it is the closest one to San Salvador.
The second most important place for surfing (during the months of November to February) is El Sunzal. This beach is also very renowned for the relaxed atmosphere and the many dining options - from small diners to fancy restaurants.
Here you may also have no trouble looking for a surf guide or instructor since now many good local surfers make a living by teaching foreigners and Salvadorans how to surf and renting surfboards. Renting per the day will cost you about $12.
The place is separated into two beaches by a rock called El Tunco (The Pig). The side El Tunco is not recommended for foreigners to try to surf there as it is one of the few areas left that are still for local population only. As the quantity of people visiting the beaches in La Libertad is constantly increasing, beach parties or batucadas (African drums) are organized until the early hours in the morning.
Located on Kilometer 53 El Zonte is also another good choice when you're looking for a place to practice surfing. It is highly famous among tourists who come looking for more, far from the main town noise. A great number of hotels and hostels provide their services, though reservations are recommended - especially during weekends and high seasons.
