 Though the region is not great for beaches and much of the coast is mangrove forests and consequently where beaches appear muddy, there is an exception - the Coral Coast - which has the best stretch of beaches on Viti Levu and some of the resorts have beautifully manicured white sandy beaches with palm trees and lagoons where snorkeling and swimming is much better. Nananu-i-Ra Island boasts of great beaches for beachcombing. The waters around most parts of Viti Levu are not good for snorkeling because of exposed and consequently dead reefs at low tide. The majority of resorts provide snorkeling trips by boat to better offshore coral reefs.
Denarau Island boasts of the best beach around Nadi. It is located a five minute drive from the town centre, but only because the Sheraton keep it topped up with imported white sand. And Vuda Point is about 20 mins to the north of Nadi. You may enjoy a nice beach for walking along around Veseisei village and a quite sandy spot for relaxing at First Landing Resort.
Natadola beach is one of the best in Viti Levu. The powder sand is beautiful and white but the ambiance is sparse. No amenities are at the beach, so if you want a drink, you should bring your own. Occasionally the beach is full with busloads of locals on a day out. The beach alone is not worth the journey, unless you like bodysurfing, which is good great here.
The best stretch of coastline on Viti Levu is the Coral Coast. Though, the beaches are only average by Fiji's standards, although they are still considered good internationally. It is impossible to swim due to exposed dead coral, and that is the main problem with the beaches - at low tide. But since the larger resorts (Outrigger, Warwick and Naviti) have lagoons, this is not a problem. The wild and remote beaches for beachcombing are east of Korolevu.
There is no beach at Suva and only a few half-decent beaches are located along the entire eastern coast.
There are six very good beaches amidst pleasant tropical surroundings of Nananu-i-Ra Island off the north coast of Viti Levu. You may enjoy several small independent resorts on the island, all with a very laid-back atmosphere. You may walk around the island in a day, as it is an excellent destination for beachcombing.
