Beruwela beach is the starting point of the 130 km long stretch of beach. Great steps have been made here in the field of resort development in the past few years. Almost for the whole year the bay around is ideal for bathing.
Aluthgama, Weligama, Nilaveli are offering water sports possibilities nowhere else to be found. Fishing, surfing, angling, water skiing, snorkeling - all are for you here. The coast to the South of Unawatuna, especially between Weligama, Mirissa and Matara, is still untouched by mass tourism and offers beside laid back villages and secluded beaches some of the best surf spots on the island. In this area the famous (original) stilt fishing men still can be found.
Arugam Bay, Bentota and Unawatuna are comparatively quiet destinations. Arugam Bay is located about 300 km on the South Eastern coast from Colombo. It is a lazy little fishing village of richly endowed with a beautiful stretch of ocean and vast expanses of deserted beach. In the last twenty years Arugam Bay has grown, into a big attraction for lovers of the surf. The Bentota Resort Complex is an ideal romantic beach holiday with luxurious hotels, shopping arcades and cafeterias. Unawatuna is also a beautiful and quiet beach resort just 5 km south of Galle.
Hikkaduwa is the place where you can see the creatures that inhabit the incredible depths of the sea and have a glimpse of the charming underwater world. Hikkaduwa is 98 km south of Colombo. The famous coral gardens are located here. You can get hold of a glass bottomed boat or flippers and plunge into the ocean.
Galle is a town of prime importance in the southern part of Sri Lanka 116 km south of Colombo. Its natural harbor was a well-known fort in the past. Nowadays Galle is lace making, ebony carving and gem polishing.
