| Cana Gorda | Guánica is located on the southwest coast of Puerto Rico between Ponce and Mayagüez. It is a town where life is basically connected with the sea. Many natives have holiday homes in the area, and here are also lots of houseboats. Guánica’s Caña Gorda Public Beach is popular among locals and guests for its serene emerald green waters and wide white coral coastline.
You can walk along the shoreline and explore it on your own, or head for a tour to the proximate Guánica Forest Reserve with some astonishing secluded beaches.
The sea around Guánica is spotted with little bays, many of them have no name and all are uninhabited, excepting some species of plants and birds. The small isle named Gilligan’s Island is a snorkeler’s dream coming true, enclosed by pure clear waters overflowing with sea life.
Guánica Bay was considered to be the landing place of Christopher Columbus, and today it is an gorgeous haven with a narrow entrance jammed between high, rocky ledges. It is also the place where American General Nelson Miles disembarked in 1898 in the period of the Spanish American War.
If you drive further west to Ensenada, you may observe the remains of the outstanding Guánica Sugar Cane Central, the largest sugar mill in Puerto Rico.
