For many years generations of people have drove from San Juan and to the eastern region to spend a day at Luquillo Beach. A vacation in Puerto Rico was regarded as imperfect without a visit to this famous site at the seaside.
The scenery from the beach is magnificent: a long gold curved line of sand with myriad coconut palms, with the foggy mountains of the rainforest rising on the horizon.
Today Luquillo is still one of the island’s most favorite beaches. Offshore rocks make the waters still, so families with children can rest realizing that lifeguards are somewhere around and that violent tides and deep waters are far away. Plentiful parking, changing rooms and public toilets, and souvenir and food kiosks are near. And lots of other facilities are available here, such as boat access, rentals, windsurfing and camping amenities.
The “Sea without Barriers” program is among other options, it is aimed at helping visitors in wheelchairs to be with their family and friends in the warm waters of the Atlantic Ocean.
Another attraction is the range of brightly painted stands nearby the entry to the public beach. From usual huts to amazing mini-restaurants, each stall sells all from cold beer and snacks and hand-made coconut sweets to local seafood fritters and the full range meals. And all of them seem to like their own lively tropical music!
