| Punta Santiago | Puerto Rico's central mountain range falls into the Caribbean Sea at the southeast shore, near Humacao, Naguabo and Yabucoa. The place is full of contrasts and surprises. You’ll find secluded bays and wide stretches of open beach, white coral and black sand, comfortable hotels and rentals as well as enormous luxury resorts.
One of the most striking coastlines is near Humacao at Punta Santiago, a peninsula that protrudes into the turquoise sea waters of the Caribbean. Santiago Cay is located somewhere near the tip of it, it is a small island abundant with only Rhesus monkeys, descendants of laboratory animals which were returned to nature.
If you want to visit the cay, you will need a special authorization. The “natives” are usually rather unfriendly, but boat tours are readily available. Such a trip is a great enjoyment for children as well as for the monkeys, who seem to like observing their guests from a safe distance. You will also have an opportunity to relish the fantastic views of the tropical coastline.
Punta Santiago is spotted with lots of small stalls and dining places offering a diversity of tropical dishes. Guests can find anything from golden grouper and shark pieces to local favorites such as rice with large pieces of land crab.
